It is now official: the 60th edition of the Gamper will take place on Sunday, August 10th, 2025, six days before the opening round of the Spanish League and a perilous trip to the Balearic Islands to take on Mallorca.

What is the Gamper Trophy?

Created in 1966 as a tribute to Joan Gamper, the founder of FC Barcelona in 1899, this annual friendly tournament celebrates his memory and his invaluable contributions. It embodies the spirit and passion that Joan Gamper instilled in FC Barcelona, reminding everyone of the foundations on which the club was built. The match takes place at FC Barcelona’s stadium.

The Gamper serves as a prelude to the Blaugrana’s football season, allowing supporters to see their team in action before the start of official competitions. FC Barcelona also use this friendly match as an opportunity to officially present their new recruits to the fans who flock to the stadium during the busiest of times of the tourist season in Spain.

Who was Joan Gamper?

Born Hans-Max Gamper, Joan Gamper was a Swiss businessman. A passionate football fan, he founded the club in 1899 and was a central figure, not only as a player and the club’s first captain (between 1899 and 1903), but also as president on five occasions (between 1908 and 1925). Joan Gamper devoted his life to the promotion of football and the growth of FC Barcelona.

Past results of the Gamper

Over its first 59 editions, the Gamper was contested in two distinct formats. From its inception in 1966 until 1996, it was played with four teams. Since 1997, only one club has been invited to play this summer fixture against Barça.

Among Barça’s recent and illustrious opponents in this friendly are such major European clubs as Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Napoli, Arsenal, AS Roma or AC Milan . International heavyweights such as Argentina’s Boca Juniors and Santos of Brazil have also come up against the blaugranas.

Which is the most successful club?

FC Barcelona have won the Gamper on 46 of their 59 occasions. FC Köln, winners on two occasions in 1978 and 1981, are second. Also, the German club has been invited to take part in the Gamper most often (5 times). The other teams to have won the trophy are AS Monaco (2024), Sampdoria (in 2012), Manchester City (2009), Juventus (2005), FC Valencia (1994), Tenerife (1993), Mechelen (1989), FC Porto (1987), Internacional (1982), Mönchengladbach (1972) and Újpest (1970).
