The new Champions League format

The Champions League is a yearly football competition that brings together the best European clubs. From the 2024-2025 season, the format of the Champions League will change. Europe’s premier football competition will now consist of 36 teams (previously 32). A single-league phase format will replace the eight-group structure. This league phase will be preceded by preliminary rounds (July-August) and will decide the clashes in the competition’s last 16.

Qualifying rounds (July – August 2024)

The competition begins in July 2024 with the preliminary rounds. This qualifying phase includes all the national league champions who do not meet the criteria (UEFA coefficient) for direct qualification. At the end of the 4 rounds, only 7 teams will emerge and validate their place in the League phase of the Champions League.

ROUND FIRST LEG RETURN LEG
1st round July 9-10, 2024 July 16-17, 2024
2nd round July 23-24, 2024 July 30-31, 2024

The League phase of the Champions League (September 2024 – January 2025)

The seven teams that qualify from the preliminary rounds are added to the twenty-nine clubs that have already booked their place in the League phase. A draw is made, during which the thirty-six best football clubs in Europe are divided into four groups of nine teams, according to the UEFA coefficient.

And this is where things get a little more complex: each club plays against different opponents: two teams from its own group and two clubs from each of the other groups, for a total of eight single matches (four at home and four away).

At the end of this first phase, the top eight teams in the League phase qualify for the Round of 16. The teams ranked 9th to 24th will fight in a play-off round for the last eight places in the Round of 16. Teams above 24th place are eliminated, with no repechage into the Europa League.
