Unless you are an assiduous follower of US soccer, you may never have heard of this competition. The USL Cup is a soccer competition in the USA. Also known as the USL Jägermeister Cup for sponsorhip purposes, it was created in 2024 brings together the 24 clubs of the USL Championship and the 14 clubs of the USL League One. The 38 teams are divided into six groups of 6 or 7 teams, depending on their geographical area. From April to July, each team plays a total of four matches, two at home and two away, with only one thing in mind : The qualification for the quarter-finals.
Note the special points system for the group stage of the tournament: there are no draws, and the teams have to go straight to penalties if tied after 90 minutes, in which case the winning team pockets 2 points, while the losers walk away with one point. In the event of a victory in regulation time, three points will be awarded to the winning side.
