About the Euro 2028

Euro 2028 qualifiers

A total of 55 teams, divided into twelve groups of 4 or 5 teams (Group A to Group L), will battle during the Euro qualifiers (March 2026 until November 2027) to win one of the 20 qualifying spots for the European Football Championship. The last four places are awarded by a play-off format for which the best teams (non-qualified for the Euro) will be drawn from each of the four leagues (A, B, C, and D) of the Nations League.

Euro 2028 draw

The Euro 2028 draw will take place in December 2027. The 21 nations + 3 nations to qualify via the Nations League play-offs are drawn into six groups of 4 (from Group A to Group F), where each nation faces every other team from the same group. As a result, there will be six matches per group. Please note that matches for every group are played in two different cities.

Nations qualified for the Euro 2028

According to UEFA’s bid regulations, automatic qualification for host nations is limited to a maximum of two associations. It has not yet been decided exactly what the selection criteria will be to determine which host countries will automatically qualify from among England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The 9 stadiums and cities hosting the Euro 2028

England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Ireland are set to host the Euro 2028 tournament. Matches will be held in nine designated stadiums across eight cities. Notably, the iconic Anfield Stadium in Liverpool and Old Trafford in Manchester are not on the list of venues for an event of this magnitude.

    • Newcastle, St. James Park
    • Birmingham, VillaPark
  • Wales
    • Cardiff, Millenium Stadium
  • Scotland

In all likelihood, the Euro 2028 final will be played at Wembley, London (90,652 seats). The final will take place on 9 July 2028.

The winners of the European football championship

Spain occupies the top spot in the European football championship winner rankings. La Roja, with its win against England in the 2024 final, has won the trophy on 4 occasions. Additionally, the Spanish team is the only nation to win two consecutive editions of the Euro (2008 and 2012). Italy and The French national team are just behind in the classification with 2 wins each.

It is noteworthy that the last six editions of the Euro have been dominated by Southern European nations: Greece (2004), Spain (2008, 2012, and 2024), Portugal (2016), and Italy (2021).

Before that, the trend was in the opposite direction, as between 1972 and 2000, the northern nations had control over the tournament’s outcome: Germany (1972, 1980 and 1996), France (1984 and 2000), the Netherlands (1988), Denmark (1992) and the Czech Republic (1976).

  • Spain: 4 titles (1964, 2008, 2012, 2024)
  • Germany: 3 titles (1972a, 1980a, 1996)
  • Italy: 2 titles (1968, 2020b)
  • France: 2 titles (1984, 2000)
  • Portugal: 1 title (2016)
  • Greece: 1 title (2004)
  • Denmark: 1 title (1992)
  • Netherlands: 1 title (1988)
  • Russia: 1 title (1960c)
  • Czech Republic: 1 title (1976d)

a: RFA (West Germany)
b: The Euro 2020 was played in 2021
c: USSR (Soviet Union)
