About the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal's home ground

The Emirates Stadium, also known as the Arsenal Stadium or Ashburton Grove, has been home to Arsenal since its completion in 2006.

The capacity of 60,704 makes it the fourth-largest football stadium in England. As well as Arsenal games, the ground has also held international matches for Brazil and music concerts.

Since 2009 the stadium has undergone an “Arsenalisation” process to improve the ground’s visible links to Arsenal’s rich and successful history. Two ends at the Emirates Stadium were renamed in 2010 in honour of famous stands at their old Highbury Ground, with the Clock End and North Bank behind each goal to join the East and West stands.

How to get to Emirates Stadium in London

The Emirates Stadium is in the Highbury area of the London Borough of Islington and is well-served by several public transport routes.

Arsenal station on the Piccadilly Line is closest to the northern end of the station, with Holloway Road also on the Piccadilly Line closest to the southern end. However, Holloway Road is entry-only before matches and exit-only after games to prevent overcrowding.

Highbury & Islington station is a little further away than Holloway Road, but London Overground services provide excellent links to North-West, East London, and London King’s Cross. At the same time, the Victoria Line takes you into the centre of London from Highbury & Islington or Finsbury Park with fast, regular trains.

About Arsenal

Arsenal, initially established by workers at the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory in 1886, has a unique origin story. Named ‘Dial Square’ as a nod to the factory’s sundial, the team’s logo features a cannon, and its nickname “the Gunners” stems from their early association with gun and ammunition manufacturing.

Arsenal biggest matches and rivalries

Arsenal’s most intense rivalry is with Tottenham, marking the North-London derby as a highly anticipated event. This rivalry intensified after Arsenal relocated to North London in 1913 and grew as Tottenham became a top contender.

Another significant rival is Manchester United, with a rivalry rooted in a 1990 brawl that led to point deductions for both clubs. This rivalry peaked in the 2000s, highlighted by the notable clashes between Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira.

Additionally, Arsenal shares a rivalry with Chelsea, fueled by geographical proximity and heightened by Chelsea’s rise to prominence in the 2000s, frequently vying for the Premier League title against Arsenal.
